Walkerburn Bowling Club News.

As Mark Twain once famously said, “Reports of my death are exaggerated”! And so it is with the Bowling Club.

Although the clubhouse sits in a rather dilapidated and forlorn state in mid-winter, plans are well advanced for its demolition and the building of a splendid new replacement building and the club is in good health as the new season approaches. Don’t believe any rumours to the contrary!.

We are delighted to let everyone know that the SBC Building Control have issued a Demolition Certificate and the roof has already been removed. It won’t be long before we have the foundations ready for the new building.

The replacement clubhouse has been ordered and contractors are ready to start work as soon as we have full Planning Permission in place. This might mean a slight delay and may intrude on the early part of the season, but the green is in excellent condition and we will be up and running as soon as weather allows and the new season starts.

We will be encouraging as many new members as possible to join us and challenge the current players! Anyone, young or old (or even in-between!) who wants to join a very friendly and welcoming club is invited to get in touch with us in the Spring as the new season approaches.

Walkerburn Bowling Club News.

The Bowling Club AGM was held in the HBMI Club on Sunday 27th December, and the club would like to express its thanks to the HB Club committee for allowing us to use their warm and comfortable premises.

The Bowling clubrooms are closed and awaiting demolition before a Spring rebuild and it was good to be able to report to the excellent turnout of members that the sorry and almost disastrous start to the 2016 season had been turned round completely. A strong committee was elected to take the club forward though 2017.

Vice- President Mani Manian gave a short review of the past season and praised everyone who had supported us this year. The sponsors, the members, the tea ladies, the committee members, and many others, were thanked warmly.

Our newly elected President, Tom Hardie, took over the reins, assisted by new secretary Bruce Macalister and the re-elected existing committee members and our Pétanque section.

It was heartening to hear that the club was financially in a sound position, mainly due to exceedingly generous help from the Rotary Club, Scottish Borders Council and numerous other helpers and sponsors. We were able to negotiate a very fair settlement with our insurers to enable us to proceed with plans to completely demolish and replace the clubhouse, and this is being actively pursued. Some work is also in hand for maintaining the playing green and replacement of part of the fencing. The Pétanque piste will be re-surfaced in the spring.

Our face book page and future issues of 'Burning Issues' will keep everyone updated with the progress we are making.

Once again, congratulations to the 2016 Season prizewinners. We will be encouraging as many new members as possible to join us and challenge the current players! Anyone, young or old (or even in-between!) who wants to join a very friendly and welcoming club is invited to get in touch with us in the Spring as the new season approaches.
